Sausage Pinwheels

  • 1 lb hot sausage
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 Tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ¼ cup shortening
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • grated cheese (optional)

Combine the flour, baking powder and salt. Cut in shortening, then add the milk to make a sticky dough. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and roll the dough into and rectangle 18 inches by 12 inches. Spread uncooked sausage over the dough and spread the optional cheese over the sausage if desired. Roll the dough jellyroll fashion starting with a long side. Cover and refrigerate for one hour. Slice the rolled dough into ¼ in slices and bake on a cookie sheet at 350 degrees for twenty minutes.
